when bullet passes throw the window glass then it leaves behind a small hole nearly equal to its diameter. But when we hit a glass with a stone then whole glass breaks down. WHY?

when a fast moving bullet hits a glass ,den it remains in contact with the glass for a very short period of time and ,,,the disturbance can not travel a larger distance ........
while in case of stone a non uniform distance is generated throughout ,,,,,as a rersult some part of glass is in state of rest and some is moving ,,,, as a result glass is cracked

The bullet hits the glass with a very high speed. So it interacts with glass for very short time. In this interval the momentum is not transfered and hence a hole equal to the size of the bullet is produced.
When stone hits the glass it interacts relatively for more time. In this case momentum is transfered to a larger area and hence the glass is cracked.

in case of bullet velocity is high and the shape is also uniform but in case of stone velocity is less and shape is also non uniform. if the time of impact of stone is very short like bullet then it will pierce like bullet.

Hello maverick83,
The velocity of the bullet fired by a gun is comparatively greater than the stone thrown by an individual.So obviously the kinetic energy of the bullet is greater than that of the stone.The kinetic energy utilized by the bullet to break the glass is much smaller than its total kinetic energy.So it takes away the glass having area equal to the diameter of the bullet.Whereas on the other hand, most of the kinetic energy or almost all the kinetic energy of the stone is utilized to break the glass.So the whole glass is broken due to the stone.
