why diameter of a cavity increase when its temp. increase. Plzz give complete explanation. i am confused because i think that due to thermal expantion body expands uniformly in all directions then diameter should decrease.... Plzz clear my doubt... For eg this promlem... If you heat a metal ring equally on all sides, will the hole in the middle increase in size, decrease, or stay the same?

see man, visualise it this way, take the metal ring & cut it from any point & bend it to make it straight & then heat it. its length will increase which means, had it been a ring, then its circumference would hav increased, so, diameter has to increase...
i hope you got it..

hello my answer is like this
for isotropic solid %age change in lenght for a given temp change is same for all lines in solid , thus if we have a flat plate with a hole, then change in lenght/ori lenght , is same for lenght thickness and every other line. thus the hole will also expand bcoz atom of the material surrounding the hole also move apart
RATE me if understood

On heating, due to thermal expansion of the material of the cavity, its diameter increase. Now expansion is due to the increase in molecular vibrations, due to which intermolecular distance increases. This increase will happen only when the material gets more space to occupy, this will happen if expansion occurs in outward direction.
So the cavity finds its space for expansion in the owtward direction that results into an increase in its dia.

A paradox is an argument that starts with apparently acceptable assumptions and leads by apparently valid deductions to an apparent contradiction. Since logic admits no contradictions, either the apparently acceptable assumptions are not acceptable, or the apparently valid
deductions are not valid, or the apparent contradiction is not a contradiction. A paradox moves us to reexamine the argument until we find out what is wrong.

ya man ..... circumference is nothing but length on cutting off.. length increases on heating....... and so on again joining the two ends to form a circle..... we find the circumference to be increased. Now circumference = 2 radius. so increase in circumference =>increase in radius (or diameter)
